The history of the holiday began more than 100 years ago. The first attempt to establish Mother's Day in the Russian Empire was made on December 1, 1915, but the date was not permanent.
The holiday gained official status in the 1990s. It was established by Presidential Decree No. 120 "On Mother's Day" dated January 30, 1998.
Since then, Mother's Day has been celebrated in Russia on the last Sunday of November. In 2025, the holiday falls on November 30.
