Let's Speak Russian

The State Duma adopted a law for the protection of the Russian language from excessive use of borrowed language in the public space. The Law for the Protection of Consumer Rights is supplemented by an article of information for public review. As a general rule, this will include non-advertising information that is posted in public places, for example, using signs, inscriptions, pointers, and information boards. According to the law, these informational signs in public places must be written in Russian. They can also be duplicated in the languages of the peoples of Russia or in foreign languages. The law will go into force on March 1, 2026.

The new version of the law, "On the State Language of the Russian Federation," was aimed at limiting the use of foreign words by government agencies, controlling the excess of borrowing language and encouraging adherence to the norms of the Russian literary language.

To date, four relevant dictionaries have been prepared, which include foreign words that are part of the modern literary Russian language today, i.e. are acceptable for use without translation.

According to the Ministry of Education, in 2027, they plan to launch a publicly available Internet system with information on such rules - the National Vocabulary Collection.
