Prevention of drug abuse (psychoactive substances) is a process (preventive measures) by which an attempt is made to prevent the onset of the use of psychoactive substances and drug addiction or to limit the development of problems associated with their use. Prevention efforts can be focused on a person or their environment. Preventive actions may be aimed at changing community conditions or policies in a way that reduces the availability of substances or the demand for them.[1]

For an individual, the prevention of drug or substance abuse includes many different activities aimed at helping to completely stop or reduce the use of psychoactive substances. The time period and type of preventive measures required to help a particular person can vary depending on many aspects and should be based on individual needs.
