World Poetry Day, celebrated annually on March 21, is an occasion to honor poets, revive oral traditions of poetry readings, increase interest in reading, writing and teaching poetry, promote rapprochement between poetry and other forms of art such as theater, dance, music and painting, as well as provide wider coverage of poetry in the media. It was established at the 30th session of the UNESCO General Assembly, held in 1999 in Paris (France). The holiday was celebrated for the first time in 2000.
