Defender of the Fatherland Day is one of the most important public holidays in Russia. On February 23, the Day of Military Glory of Russia is celebrated — Defender of the Fatherland Day. The date was chosen because on February 23, 1918, it is believed that the Red Guard units won the first victories at Pskov and Narva over the troops of Kaiser Germany. This day was designated the "birthday of the Red Army." In 1922, Red Army Day became an official holiday, and then in the USSR it was celebrated as the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy.
