The original initiative to establish an official Poetry Day came from poet Tessa Sweezy Webb. In 1938, a woman proclaimed October 15 as Poetry Day (according to some sources, on this day the founder of belles-lettres, Virgil, was born). By 1951, this date was recognized by thirty-eight US states, as well as Mexico, and was celebrated as National Poetry Day. Then this day began to be celebrated in other countries as World Poetry Day.
