"Lord of the Flies" is the debut allegorical novel by the English writer, winner of the 1983 Nobel Prize in Literature William Golding, published in 1954, with elements of dystopia. The novel was originally conceived as an ironic commentary on the popular 19th-century novel Coral Island by Robert Ballantyne.

The novel was first published in Russian in 1969 in five issues of the magazine "Around the World" translated by Vladimir Telnikov. This translation was no longer published, and the novel began to be published as a separate book only in 1981, translated by Elena Surits.
